The University of Malta is becoming increasingly international, with around 2,000 students from 130 different countries set to study at the university during the 2026/27 academic year.

They will form part of a student population of more than 13,000, as thousands return to campus and a new generation begins university life.

More than 5,500 students are new to the University of Malta this year, including over 2,500 undergraduate students and more than 2,200 postgraduate students.

The university will also welcome around 350 Erasmus students, together with approximately 500 visiting students registered for micro-credentials.

In total, the University of Malta is offering 931 courses across a wide range of fields this academic year.

The increasingly international make-up of the university means students are now sharing classrooms and campus life with people from dozens of different cultures and backgrounds, further changing the face of Malta’s main university.

Education Minister Byron Camilleri visited students during Freshers’ Week as the academic year officially got underway under the theme “Building Tomorrow – Through Knowledge, Purpose and Community.”

Lectures for continuing students began on 28th September, while first-year students are set to begin lectures on 8th October.

Meanwhile, more than 1,100 new students are also joining Junior College, bringing its student population to over 2,100.
