Around 10 kilometres of public spaces across Malta have been upgraded through an extensive programme of maintenance, regeneration and embellishment works carried out by the Tourism Zones Regeneration Agency up to July this year.

The Agency carried out hundreds of interventions in 22 different localities, with the aim of improving the quality of public spaces and creating safer, cleaner and more welcoming environments for residents and visitors.

The works formed part of ongoing efforts to enhance communal areas and ensure that public spaces remain accessible, functional and better suited to the needs of local communities.

The progress was announced during a visit by Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism Zones Regeneration Agency Dennis Vella, to Hubbard Gardens in Cospicua.

During the visit, they reviewed the work carried out by the Agency during the first months of the year and the interventions implemented to further improve public spaces around the country.

Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli said the works reflected the Government’s commitment to continued investment in public spaces that contribute to residents’ quality of life while also improving the experience of visitors.

She said that every repaired bench, upgraded promenade and improvement that makes an area safer and more welcoming represents an investment in communities and families across Malta and Gozo.

The Minister added that the Government would continue working with Local Councils and other relevant entities to ensure that more localities benefit from projects that improve the country’s public spaces while providing modern, accessible and sustainable areas for the public.

Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism Zones Regeneration Agency Dennis Vella explained that the Agency continued to carry out maintenance, embellishment and regeneration works in different localities, in collaboration with Local Councils and public entities.

Between January and July, the Agency installed and repaired around 500 benches, 30 street lighting poles, 100 signs, 100 planters, as well as bollards and bins.

It also carried out embellishment works on 9,685 metres of walls and bench bases, alongside the restoration and repair of 2,524 metres of railings in various public spaces.

In addition to these works, the Agency assembled and dismantled around 800 stalls used during social and cultural activities organised in 38 localities across the country.

During the same period, it also worked alongside the Malta Tourism Authority to install beach amenities, including showers, signs and waste containers.

The Agency also continued adopting sustainable practices by repairing and reusing existing assets, such as benches, wherever possible, instead of replacing them with new ones.
