As the countdown to midnight begins in Malta, much of the world has already welcomed the New Year, while several countries will celebrate at the exact same moment.

Malta rings in the New Year on Central European Time (UTC +1). By the time the clock strikes midnight locally, a large part of the globe is already living in the new year.

In fact, around two-thirds of the world celebrates New Year’s Eve before Malta.

The first places to do so are in the Pacific, including Kiribati’s Line Islands, Samoa, Tonga and New Zealand.

They are followed by Australia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and much of the Middle East and Eastern Europe, all of which reach midnight hours ahead of Malta due to their time zones.

However, Malta is far from alone when the final countdown arrives.

Several countries celebrate New Year’s Eve at exactly the same time, sharing the UTC +1 time zone. These include Italy, France, Germany, Spain (mainland), Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, as well as Nordic countries such as Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Parts of Africa, including Tunisia, Algeria and Nigeria, also ring in the New Year simultaneously.

Once midnight passes in Malta, celebrations continue westward across the Atlantic, through the Americas, and finally to the Pacific islands on the other side of the globe, completing the world’s journey into the New Year.
