ARMED FORCES JOIN POLICE IN OVERNIGHT SWIEQI SECURITY OPERATION

The Armed Forces of Malta joined the Police in carrying out a security presence in Swieqi overnight, in what Deputy Mayor Jordan Galea Pace described as another important step towards addressing residents’ concerns over safety and public order in the locality.

Writing on social media, Galea Pace said the deployment followed sustained pressure from the Swieqi Local Council and residents for stronger action to be taken.

“Another step which, as a Council, together with residents, we have been pushing for for a long time. And we have achieved it,” he said, explaining that Armed Forces personnel were present alongside the Police during the night as a deterrent.

The Deputy Mayor reiterated the council’s commitment to ensuring that Swieqi remains a locality where residents can feel safe and enjoy peace within their own homes.

“As I promised you, we will continue working so that Swieqi is a place where residents feel safe and are able to live peacefully in their own homes,” Galea Pace said.

He also called for neighbouring localities to benefit from a similar security approach.

“I would like the localities surrounding us to have the same formula as Swieqi, so that together we can eliminate this nuisance from our residential areas once and for all,” he said.

Galea Pace thanked both the Malta Police Force and the Armed Forces of Malta for their work, describing the deployment as another step forward while insisting that efforts would not stop there.

“Thank you to the Police and the Armed Forces for their valuable work. Another step forward. We will not stop here,” he said.

The involvement of the Armed Forces marks a notable development in the security response being used to address community concerns in Swieqi. While police patrols and enforcement operations are traditionally at the centre of maintaining public order, the additional military presence is intended primarily to provide a visible deterrent.

Attention may now turn to whether the initiative develops into a sustained and coordinated effort and whether a similar approach could eventually be extended to neighbouring localities facing comparable concerns.
