Prime Minister Robert Abela recently participated in a public consultation on the proposed transformation of Fort Campbell into a national park.

Alongside Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli, he met with architecture and engineering students who spent three days on-site between Mellieħa and Selmun developing designs for the future use of Fort Campbell as an open space for families.

The activity, organised by SACES (Society for Architecture and Civil Engineering Students) in collaboration with Project Green, provided a practical workshop for students to discuss their ideas and translate them into structures using a range of materials, including those found within the fort.

The students also had the opportunity to present their concepts to the Prime Minister and Minister Dalli.

Prime Minister Abela noted that the initiative reflects a choice to invest in public open spaces rather than using land in Mellieħa for projects with higher financial returns.

Similar approaches are planned for White Rocks, where cleaning work has already started, and Manoel Island, where discussions are ongoing about reclaiming the site.

Minister Dalli highlighted the importance of public participation in shaping these national parks. She said the workshops give students a chance to contribute to the vision for open spaces, ensuring they can be preserved, developed, and passed on to future generations.

Fort Campbell, built in 1938, was used by the British as a fortress before the Second World War.

The site has been largely abandoned but is now planned to be restored and reopened as one of three national parks. Ideas can be submitted through parksinmalta.mt.
