The Government has invested another €8 million in young people, this time through the allowance for post-secondary or tertiary students.

This measure was introduced two years ago and aims to assist parents whose children continue studying full-time (or in a course that, although part-time, is considered equivalent to full-time).

The €1,500 allowance is being paid in three instalments of €500 each and applies to students who are at least 16 years old but under 21 at the start of the scholastic year.

Payments have already started being issued over the past few days and are granted automatically, without the need for families to apply. The allowance is also separate from the regular stipend students already receive.

Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, Michael Falzon, said that around 13,500 families will benefit from the measure, stressing the Government’s commitment to education and continued support for Maltese families.

The Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, highlighted the importance of investing in students throughout their educational journey. He noted that recent initiatives such as free transport, free examinations, increased stipends and other incentives have helped ease financial pressures on families.

Another 726 families will be receiving a €500 Digital Grant for Year 10 and Year 11 students, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to nearly 8,500 students.
