Almost Half A Million Euro Investment To Upgrade 3 Ħamrun Streets
Three streets in Hamrun are undergoing regeneration works through an investment of almost half a million euro aimed at improving road infrastructure, strengthening underground services and enhancing the quality of public spaces.
The project, being carried out by the Public Works Department, covers Triq Atoċja, Triq id-Duka ta’ Edinburgh and a passage in Triq San Franġisk.
The works include the removal of existing paving, excavation, replacement of the main water network and household connections, the construction of a reinforced concrete base, and the installation of new, more durable paving designed to withstand daily use.
The investment was announced during a site visit by Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with Director General of the Community Projects Division within the Public Works Department Architect Nadia Gatt and Hamrun Mayor Christian Sammut.
Minister Zerafa Civelli said the project forms part of ongoing efforts to improve local infrastructure across Malta.
She explained that such interventions not only improve the appearance of streets but also ensure stronger essential services beneath the surface, while providing safer and more accessible areas for residents and visitors.
The Minister said that communities deserve quality infrastructure that improves daily life, adding that the Government continues to work closely with local councils to deliver projects that strengthen services and improve public spaces.
Director General Nadia Gatt Curmi said the works are being carried out according to technical standards focused on quality and long-term durability. She explained that the project is designed to provide more resilient roads and more reliable underground infrastructure.
Hamrun Mayor Christian Sammut welcomed the investment, thanking the Ministry for Local Government and Public Works and the Public Works Department for their cooperation. He said the project will benefit the local community by improving infrastructure while contributing to the regeneration of historic areas.
A key part of the project is the regeneration of Triq Atoċja, one of the oldest and most historic parts of Hamrun. The works will also include improvements to the forecourt of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Atocja. The project started in April 2026 and is expected to be completed by October 2026, covering around 1,200 square metres.
