Almost 62,000 Families to Receive Over €24 Million in Children’s and Supplementary Allowances

Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon has confirmed that by the end of this week, almost 62,000 families will receive payments for the Children’s Allowance and the Supplementary Allowance, among other benefits, totaling over €24 million for the last quarter of the year.
Nearly 42,000 families with children will receive just under €20 million, with almost €18.4 million going towards the Children’s Allowance. The remaining funds will support families with children with disabilities and foster families. Investment in the Children’s Allowance has grown significantly over the past three years, with each child seeing an annual increase of €590. This year, total investment is expected to reach €80 million.
Almost 20,000 other families, including single individuals and couples, will receive €4.4 million in Supplementary Allowance payments, aimed at low-income households. Investment in this allowance is expected to approach €18 million this year.
Over the past 12 years, the number of Supplementary Allowance beneficiaries has fallen from around 27,000 to fewer than 20,000, due to rising household incomes reducing the need for support.
Minister Falzon emphasised that the family remains central to the Government’s social policy. He added that payments are now anticipated three weeks in advance to provide timely support, such as at the start of the school year.
Social investment in these benefits alone is expected to reach €100 million this year, reflecting the Government’s commitment to supporting families and low-income households.
