Allegations Surrounding Clayton Bartolo’s Wedding Dismissed

The Standards Commissioner has dismissed allegations that former Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo had a conflict of interest in relation to his June 2024 wedding.
The complaint, filed by Matthew Agius in July 2024, suggested that Bartolo may have received favourable treatment because the reception was held at Manta by the Sea, operated by db Group on Fortina Group property, with some guests transported on vessels owned by the Zammit Tabona family—entities linked to sectors overseen by Bartolo during his ministerial tenure.
In his report, Chief Justice Emeritus Joseph Azzopardi confirmed that Bartolo paid standard rates, totalling €123,762.51, for reception and logistical services, including €110,000 for food and hall hire and €13,762.51 for vessel use.
The Commissioner concluded that no preferential treatment was given, noting that Bartolo had not been asked for a deposit, a standard practice for large events, and that the timing of payments was irrelevant.
Bartolo reacted on social media, stating that the investigation “clearly” showed no public funds were used and that the allegations were intended to harm him personally. He added: “Anyone who threw a stone should not now try to hide their hand… they must shoulder political responsibility for their behaviour.”
The use of Golden Bee Awards resources for the ceremony was referred to the Auditor General for further review.
