All You Need To know About PN’s Proposed Metro Malta Project

The Nationalist Party has unveiled one of its biggest electoral proposals yet, a ‘Metro Malta’ Mass Rapid Transport System aimed at tackling the country’s traffic problem.
PN says the system would become the new backbone of transport in Malta, with a large part of it operating underground. The first phase would focus on a North-South route of around 11.5 kilometres.
According to the manifesto, the first phase would include 8 stations, 10 operational trains and an investment of around €1.4 billion. PN says this first phase would be operational within the first 5 years of a new PN government.
A second phase would later add another line and extend the first one, bringing the total projected investment to around €3.9 billion over several years. PN claims the full system could eventually handle around 55 million passenger trips every year.
The party says the service would be free for Maltese and Gozitan residents and would be integrated with buses, fast ferries, feeder routes, park & rides, taxis, shuttle services and mobility hubs.
PN says the aim is not only to reduce traffic, but to give people “their time back” by cutting commuting times, reducing stress and improving quality of life for families, workers and businesses.
The proposal also promises less pollution, cleaner air, more pedestrian spaces, better Gozo connectivity and less dependence on private cars.
PN says the project would be financed through discussions with European investment banks, EU financial instruments, long-term loans and potentially the Malta Development Bank.
The first steps, including planning, tenders, financing and project governance, would begin within the first 100 days of a new PN government.
