Alex Borg’s First Priorities as New PN Leader: Finances, Housing, Pension Reform, and a Fresh Economic Vision

In his first official intervention on Net TV as Nationalist Party leader, Alex Borg outlined an ambitious list of priorities, with his immediate commitment being to launch a crowdfunding initiative to address the party’s longstanding financial problems, an issue that has dominated internal discussions for years.
The PN’s financial situation was a recurring theme throughout the leadership campaign, and Borg pledged not only to seek innovative fundraising methods but also to set out a long-term financial vision for the party that does not rely on overpopulation as a growth model.
He stressed that Malta’s largest financial sectors, including those that shaped the country’s economy, were brought about under previous PN administrations, and promised that once again it will be the PN that delivers a new economic vision. Among the niches he highlighted were artificial intelligence, e-sports, and 3D printing.
The PN Electoral Commission confirmed Borg’s victory in the early hours of Sunday morning, declaring that he had secured 8,905 votes against Adrian Delia’s 8,861, a razor-thin margin of just 44 votes. The result was officially announced at around 4am, nine hours after polls closed, following an intense summer-long campaign.
Beyond finances, Borg set out a range of priorities that he argued have been ignored or mishandled by the Labour government. These include:
Housing for first-time buyers: strengthening initiatives to make it easier for young people to become homeowners.
Pension injustice: Borg also pointed to what he called an “injustice” in Malta’s pension system, where certain pensioners are treated differently simply because of the year they were born. He stressed that this unfairness has dragged on for too long and pledged to apply pressure to ensure all pensioners are given equal treatment and dignity.
Open spaces and overdevelopment: finding a balance between progress and nature, an area where he accused the government of having “deeply failed.”
Borg also confirmed that a campaign manager will be appointed to kick-start preparations for the next general election, widely expected in the near future. He pledged to rebuild the PN’s fortunes and present it as a credible alternative government.
In closing, Borg thanked every individual who voted for him, as well as those who did not, vowing to earn the trust of all Nationalists. He also made it clear that Adrian Delia remains an integral part of the party, stressing unity as the PN looks ahead.
