Alex Borg Says Record Shows He Is In Favour Of IVF: Voted Against 2022 Amendments

Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg said yesterday during a debate on XTRA, that he was and is in favour of IVF, after he was one of only three in parliament who, in 2022, voted against embryo genetic testing amendments.

In 2022, embryo genetic testing was approved by parliament with 66 votes in favour and three against.

Borg was one of three, along with Adrian Delia and Ivan Bartolo, who voted against the amendments.

During yesterday’s debate, Borg said that he would not vote against IVF since he could be one of many youth who want to raise a family. When Abela pressed him, the PN leader said he was always consistent about the issue and called these lies from the Labour Party.

A clip shared by the Labour Party on social media shows the moment Borg had said during a PN leadership debate with Adrian Delia that he was one of few MPs who voted against the amendments.

The amendments widened accessibility to IVF, introducing pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) for nine hereditary diseases. This allows doctors to choose healthy embryos for transfer and setting aside ‘defective’ embryos which would be kept frozen.

Back in 2022, the PN said that they were voting in favour of the Bill after it was the Opposition that introduced amendments that gave parents the chance to make a decision based on informed consent.
