Alex Borg Reveals Proposals For National Strategy For Affordable Accommodation

Taking to social media, Nationalist MP Alex Borg has unveiled his vision for a national strategy on affordable accommodation, should he ever become Prime Minister and lead the Nationalist Party.
In a video message, Borg highlighted the growing difficulty for youths and workers in Malta to afford housing, stressing that the situation demands urgent and meaningful solutions. He stated that his approach to politics would always prioritise the national interest, regardless of party affiliation.
Borg’s proposal is built on three key principles:
Every person has the right to decent accommodation
Every individual should have the opportunity to invest in their own property
Social justice, to ensure that no one is left behind
He emphasised the need for long-term solutions rather than short-term schemes that only benefit a select few. Among his proposals is an equity model, where the government would assist individuals in buying their first home, giving buyers the option to gradually purchase the government’s share.
Other measures include state-guaranteed, subsidised home loans with lower interest rates and longer repayment terms for low- and middle-income earners or those facing hardships.
Borg also proposed loan schemes to cover deposits for first-time buyers, as well as incentives and tax reductions for the restoration of empty properties, preserving community value while addressing housing shortages.
Borg called for a national discussion on the issue, aiming to develop a sustainable strategy that ensures access to housing for all.
