Alex Borg Reports Power Cut At Balzan Apartment As PN Calls Urgent Debate

In a live video on Facebook, Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg shared his experience with a power-cut in his Ħal Balzan apartment, saying that this is a common reality during Maltese summers.

‘The apartment does not have a generator, so we’ll probably have to spend a night without power. Nothing to do except stay in the heat’, he said.

Borg said that as an Opposition, they will continue to apply pressure to give compensation to all the families and businesses around Malta and Gozo losing money and being impacted by the power cuts.

This follows Borg calling an emergency parliamentary debate in light of the power cuts affecting the country.

These power cuts are ‘causing genuine hardship for families, older people, vulnerable persons and businesses suffering substantial financial losses.’

“It is unacceptable that, in 2026, Maltese and Gozitan families are still spending long hours in the dark, without a fan, without a refrigerator and, in some cases, without the medical equipment on which they depend. In a European country, electricity is a fundamental right, not a luxury,” Alex Borg said.

The Nationalist Party insisted on number of immediate measures, which include:

An automatic compensation mechanism for households left without electricity for extended periods; compensation for food, medicines and equipment that have been damaged; a fast-track process for vulnerable persons and small businesses; substantial improvements in communication with consumers; and priority for people who depend on medical equipment.

‘At the same time, the Partit Nazzjonalista is calling for structural reform of the national electricity network, with planned and transparent investment measured against actual demand, clear service reliability standards and a national emergency plan that anticipates heatwaves before blackouts occur.’

In response, the Labour Party issued a statement saying that the PN’s only urgency is scoring political points by exploiting extreme weather conditions affecting Europe to manufacture a sense of crisis.

The PN, said the Labour Party, is portraying localised faults in the distribution network as a collapse of Malta’s energy system.

‘The facts show otherwise. Despite the extreme temperatures driving record electricity demand, Malta has sufficient generation capacity. The power cuts affecting parts of Birkirkara, Balzan and Iklin are linked to four separate and localised cable faults.’

‘The Labour Government remains focused on addressing and resolving the challenges brought about by these extraordinary conditions, so that electricity supply is restored to families and businesses in the shortest possible time. The priority is not the PN’s political theatrics, but restoring supply to every affected customer and continuing investment to make the network stronger and more resilient.’

‘The PN’s attitude also shows a lack of respect towards the workers currently out on the streets, in extreme heat, repairing faults and restoring the service.’
