At a political event organised by the Nationalist Party, supporters had the opportunity to meet the party’s candidates for Malta’s 4th district, followed by a keynote speech from Opposition Leader Alex Borg as part of his ‘Nifs Ġdid’ campaign.

During his address, Borg spoke about Malta’s growing population, including the increasing number of foreign nationals living and working on the island.

He said a future Nationalist government would seek to better manage population growth while reducing bureaucracy and improving public services.

Borg outlined a proposal to establish two separate “one-stop shops;” one dedicated to Maltese and European citizens renewing official documents, and another specifically for employers and third-country nationals.

He said the aim is to streamline administrative processes and make services more efficient.

The Opposition Leader argued that rapid population growth, without the necessary investment in infrastructure, has contributed to major challenges such as traffic congestion and longer waiting times in the healthcare sector.

He also announced plans for a new Authority focused exclusively on population management, alongside an independent Immigration Board and a specialised task force aimed at tackling crime.

Borg added that, under a Nationalist government, foreign workers in client-facing roles would be required to acquire a basic understanding of Maltese within their first year of employment.
