Opposition Leader Alex Borg on Wednesday evening expanded on his party’s healthcare proposals during a political activity in Mellieħa, building on plans announced a day earlier as part of the Nationalist Party’s vision ahead of the 30 May general election.

Addressing supporters, Borg outlined a five-year plan centred on the development of four modern hospitals and a National Health Village, aimed at strengthening Malta’s healthcare infrastructure and reducing waiting times. The proposals include a new 250-bed hospital in the north of Malta, a 400-bed hospital in Gozo, the expansion of Mater Dei Hospital, and the transformation of the Paola hub into a fully-fledged 250-bed hospital.

He explained that these projects would form part of a national network of hospitals connecting Gozo, the north, centre, and south of Malta, with the goal of improving accessibility and easing pressure on existing facilities.

Borg also announced plans for a National Health Park, a 60-bed facility focused on preventive care, reflecting a broader shift towards early intervention rather than treatment alone.

A key priority, he said, is reducing waiting times by shifting focus away from waiting lists and towards the actual time patients spend waiting for treatment. He emphasised the need for a more efficient system that delivers faster care and shorter delays.

The PN leader further highlighted the importance of patient-centred care, stating that the system must move away from treating individuals as numbers and instead prioritise personalised treatment. He added that improved local services would reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

The proposals build on commitments made during the party’s first mass rally, where Borg also pledged free cancer treatment, increased investment in healthcare professionals, and the digitalisation of patient data systems.

He concluded by stating that the party’s aim is to deliver a stronger, more accessible, and prevention-focused healthcare system through sustained investment in infrastructure, workforce, and treatment access.
