Alex Borg, 30, has officially been declared the new leader of the Nationalist Party, making him the youngest-ever leader of a major political party in Malta.

The PN Electoral Commission confirmed Borg’s victory in the early hours of Sunday morning, announcing that he had secured 8,905 votes against Adrian Delia’s 8,861, a margin of just 44 votes.

The party confirmed his victory at around 4am, nine hours after polls closed, following an intense summer-long campaign.

Should the Nationalist Party win the upcoming general election, Borg would also become Malta’s youngest-ever prime minister.

Borg, who has become Gozo’s most prominent political voice within the PN, hails from a family with strong political roots. He is the son of the late Tony Borg, former mayor of Fontana and chief of staff to ex-Gozo minister Giovanna Debono.

His political career began when he was elected Gozo coordinator of MŻPN, the PN’s youth wing. He went on to secure a place on the PN executive committee in 2021, before rising rapidly through the party ranks. In the 2022 general election, Borg was elected to parliament as the PN’s most popular candidate in Gozo, winning 6,100 votes.

Outside of politics, Borg’s personal life has also drawn public attention. He is from Gozo, in a relationship with TV host and social media influencer Sarah Bajada, is a former Mr Malta contest winner, and is passionate about sports.
