Leader of the Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg has criticised the Government for building an economy dependent on population growth, saying that Prime Minister Robert Abela must take responsibility for his own decisions.

In a video shared to social media, Borg said that businesses and families are at risk of bearing the cost of policies designed around an increasing population.

“Jiżbalja hu u tħallas int,” Borg said, arguing that the consequences of the government’s decisions could ultimately be felt by the public.

His message comes after a polarising Budget 2027 presentation that proposed numerous taxes and fees on foreign nationals living and working in Malta.

He said that foreign workers aren’t responsible for the Government’s policies, and called for Malta to prioritise an economy focused on improving people’s quality of life, rather than increasing the financial pressures they face.
