The Executive Committee of the Partit Nazzjonalista yesterday approved the process through which the party's General Council will appoint or confirm its leader following the general election held on 30 May.

‘In the coming weeks, I will once again be presenting myself before the organs of the PN to contest for the post of Leader, as required by the Statute of the Partit Nazzjonalista’, wrote Alex Borg in a statement.

Under the PN Statute, when the party finds itself in Opposition after a general election, the Executive Committee is required to convene the General Council to begin the process for the election of a leader.

The statute also stipulates that a General Council must be held within three months of the official publication of the election result to discuss the outcome of the vote.

‘With your trust, we can continue moving forward to strengthen the Partit Nazzjonalista as a strong voice representing all Maltese and Gozitans’, added Borg.

The Executive Committee decided that the General Council will open on Saturday 20 June, following a series of Regional Assembly meetings that will take place across Malta and Gozo during the coming week.

The Council will be held on Saturday morning at the PN's Dar Ċentrali. During the meeting, councillors will be presented with a report outlining the outcome of the regional assemblies and their discussions on the party's electoral performance. The report will be delivered by the PN's President for Political Research, Professor Mary Anne Lauri.

Addresses will also be delivered by President of the General Council Mark Anthony Sammut, PN General Secretary Charles Bonello, Deputy Leader Alex Perici Calascione and PN Leader Alex Borg.

Following these proceedings, the General Council will formally entrust the party's Electoral, Records and Data Commission with initiating the process for the appointment of the party leader.

The Executive Committee also approved the regulations governing the leadership election process, as required under the provisions of the PN Statute.
