Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg has called for greater cooperation in politics, saying that working together in the national interest is essential to building the Malta and Gozo people want.

He made these remarks during a New Year’s reception for editors, journalists and social partners at the PN’s Dar Ċentrali.

Alex Borg highlighted the vital role played by journalists in ensuring that the truth reaches the public.

He expressed concern about continued attacks and intimidation faced by members of the media, stressing that a free and independent press is fundamental to democracy.

Referring to the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Borg described it as an attack on both journalism and the public’s right to know. He said it was regrettable that many recommendations arising from the public inquiry into her murder remain unimplemented.

The PN leader also addressed other national issues, including traffic, stating that on matters of broad public importance there must be agreement between the country’s two main political parties. He argued that only bipartisan cooperation can lead to long term solutions.

Borg said Malta needs a shift towards higher quality governance, rooted in serious dialogue with social partners, professionals, civil society and non government organisations. He expressed hope that the coming year would help rebuild trust between institutions and citizens, and between politics and the public.
