Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba has welcomed PN MEP Peter Agius joining the fight against a proposed €3 charge on low-value parcels imported from online retailers such as Temu and Shein for more than a year.

In a statement, Agius Saliba referred to a video recorded in February 2025, saying it showed he had opposed the proposal within the European Parliament's Internal Market Committee long before it gained wider attention.

He welcomed the support of fellow Maltese MEP Peter Agius, stating that, after two years, they were now united in opposing what he described as an unfair measure introduced by the European Commission and the Council without consulting the European Parliament.

Agius Saliba also warned that the proposed €3 fee could be only the beginning, claiming that some within the Parliament are advocating for a permanent tax of between €8 and €12 on every imported parcel once the temporary measure expires.
