MEP Alex Agius Saliba visited leading local agency Hamilton Travel following the European Parliament’s approval of new legislation aimed at strengthening consumer rights across the European Union.

During the visit, Agius Saliba underlined Malta’s continued stability despite ongoing international uncertainty, noting that the government remains committed to safeguarding the interests of families, workers, businesses and the tourism sector.

He also emphasised that the European Parliament approved a package of measures led by him, marking a significant milestone in advancing consumer protection at EU level.

Central to the reform is what he described as the strongest consumer protections in the world, particularly in relation to travel.

Under the new rules, consumers will benefit from significantly enhanced rights in situations of disruption. Most notably, travellers will now be able to cancel flights under extraordinary circumstances and receive a full refund without any financial loss. This represents a major shift from previous practices, where refunds were often delayed or replaced with vouchers.

The legislation also introduces clear obligations for companies, including the requirement to issue refunds within 14 days, ensuring prompt access to funds. In addition, cash refunds are guaranteed, preventing companies from imposing vouchers instead of reimbursement.

These measures aim to provide greater certainty and financial protection, particularly during periods of crisis or instability, when travel plans are most vulnerable.

Agius Saliba stated that the directive strengthens consumer rights in a practical and meaningful way, offering reassurance to travellers across Europe, including Maltese and Gozitan citizens.
