Alcohol Consumption In Malta Stable: Tobacco Use Declines
Local

Alcohol consumption in Malta has remained broadly stable, while tobacco use continues to decline, according to the General Population Survey on Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Use in Malta 2023.

The survey provides a detailed overview of substance use among residents aged 18 to 65 and is based on approximately 3,400 completed questionnaires, offering a representative picture of national trends over the past two decades.

Conducted every ten years, the study tracks long term patterns in alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, prescription medicines, illicit drugs, gambling and emerging areas such as vaping and medical cannabis.

The findings show that alcohol use remains widespread across the population, with a notable increase among women. Although recent alcohol consumption has risen slightly, monthly drinking levels have remained stable overall.

The survey also found that a significant proportion of drinkers exhibit behaviours associated with risky alcohol use, raising concerns about long term public health impacts.

Tobacco use continues its downward trend, with fewer adults smoking compared to previous surveys. The gap between male and female smokers is narrowing, although differences remain in smoking frequency and intensity among current users.

Cannabis use was found to be most prevalent among young adults, particularly men, with initiation typically occurring in late adolescence or early adulthood. Usage is highest among those aged 18 to 24.

Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon said the findings underline the need for strengthened prevention efforts.

In line with the National Drug Policy 2023, work is under way to establish a Prevention Coordination Body to ensure evidence based and coordinated strategies.

Manuel Gellel, Head of the National Focal Point, said the survey highlights the need for renewed action on alcohol consumption. The Ministry is also preparing to launch an updated National Alcohol Policy while continuing to invest in harm reduction and support services for vulnerable individuals.
