Ħal-Kirkop Awarded 'European Christmas Village 2026'

Ħal-Kirkop, a small village in Malta, has been awarded the title of European Christmas Village 2026 in recognition of its warm, creative, and community-driven celebrations.
The award was announced alongside recognitions for Barcelona as European Capital of Christmas 2026 and Wels as European City of Christmas 2026 by the European Capital of Christmas.
‘Kirkop is a small village in Malta with a strong sense of community and deep-rooted traditions that celebrates Christmas with a warm, creative and innovative spirit’, the announcement reads.
‘The street decorations stand out for their lights, creations made from recycled materials and crafts that showcase local history and folklore.’
‘Festive initiatives promote local identity to provide visitors with an authentic experience. Characters such as Klaus Percopus, Leonard, Joseph, Menhires and Benedetta bring the streets to life, while children write letters to Santa and receive personalised replies.’
Visitors were urged to not miss the route of lights from Triq San Benedetti to Triq Santu Rock, a local market, live nativity scenes and workshops to learn how to make a Maltese Christmas sweet.
