Agriculture Sector Boosted By Innovation And Heritage Investment

The Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights has announced a major investment in Malta’s agricultural sector through a series of agreements tied to strategic projects focused on innovation, research and the preservation of national agricultural heritage.
One of the key initiatives is the MOBAC project, which aims to protect and preserve indigenous Maltese breeds, including cattle, sheep, goats and local poultry. The project combines heritage protection with scientific advancement through the use of modern biotechnological methods such as genetic testing and cryopreservation.
This approach is expected to help identify valuable genetic traits within local breeds, offering both economic and scientific potential. It also contributes to building more resilient and sustainable food systems by reducing reliance on imports and creating new export opportunities.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo said the projects reflect the Government’s vision of developing a modern agricultural sector that balances tradition with innovation. He noted that preserving local breeds is an investment in the future of the sector and a key part of the national strategy for food security and sustainability.
He added that these initiatives are opening up new opportunities for farmers, particularly young people and women, while strengthening the sector’s overall competitiveness.
In addition, a separate tissue culture project will significantly upgrade the infrastructure of the Directorate for Research and Advisory Services. This includes improvements to the micropropagation laboratory and supporting facilities, alongside an investment of around €890,000 in advanced equipment funded through European funds.
The investment will support the development of certified local fruit tree and vine varieties and strengthen research into the authenticity and origin of Maltese crops.
Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said the investment highlights Malta’s effective use of European funding to reinforce strategic sectors, while boosting innovation, economic value and long term resilience.
