AFM Participates In COASTEX 2026 Maritime Exercise In Italy

The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) has taken part in COASTEX 2026, a maritime exercise held in Catania, Italy, under the framework of the European Coast Guard Functions Forum (ECGFF).
The AFM participated with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team, a Medical Team and an Observer, working alongside international organisations to strengthen cooperation, coordination and interoperability in a range of maritime scenarios.
The exercise included four evolving scenarios focused on different maritime challenges, including fisheries inspections, search and rescue operations, and responses to maritime emergencies. One scenario involved a collision at sea leading to an oil pollution incident, requiring coordinated action between participating teams.
The exercise also featured a floating Improvised Explosive Device (IED) scenario, where the threat was neutralised through a joint effort involving the Italian Navy (Marina Militare) and the AFM’s EOD Team.
COASTEX 2026 provided an opportunity for participating maritime forces and authorities to test their operational capabilities, improve readiness and strengthen cooperation in responding to complex maritime situations.
