AFM Launches King Air Mid-Life Upgrade & Ground Training Device

The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) has officially launched the Mid-Life Upgrade of one of its King Air Maritime Patrol Aircraft and introduced a new Ground Training Device, marking a significant step in strengthening the country's air capabilities.

The launch was attended by Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Glenn Bedingfield, Minister responsible for European Funds Keith Azzopardi Tanti, AFM Commander Brigadier Clinton J. O'Neill, representatives of Aerodata AG, which delivered the project, and senior Armed Forces officials.

Part-funded by the European Union through the Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI), the project replaces outdated systems on the King Air aircraft while upgrading its sensors, mission computers and mission systems. The improvements are intended to ensure the aircraft remains capable of meeting current and future operational requirements.

The upgraded aircraft features modern avionics, enhanced mission systems, improved navigation and communication capabilities, and greater operational efficiency. According to the AFM, these upgrades will improve situational awareness, increase safety for aircrew and strengthen interoperability with regional and international partners during joint operations.

The new Ground Training Device has also been introduced to support the entire King Air fleet. The simulator accurately replicates the aircraft's flight and mission systems, including its sensors and computer architecture, allowing pilots and aircrew to carry out realistic training in a controlled environment. This is expected to improve proficiency while reducing flying hours and operating costs.

The AFM said the investment reflects its continued commitment to developing personnel, equipment and capabilities to support Malta's national security, border management responsibilities and regional security operations.
