Afforestation Work Begins In Ġnien Ta’ Kalċi, Marsaxlokk

Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprises Miriam Dalli and Minister for European Funds and Implementation of the Electoral Programme Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, accompanied by Project Green officials and representatives from the Marsaxlokk Local Council, visited Ġnien ta’ Kalċi in Marsaxlokk to mark the start of works on a major environmental regeneration project.
Covering approximately 6,500 square metres, the initiative represents an investment of more than one million euro and forms part of broader efforts to expand green infrastructure within urban areas. The project is one of several aimed at improving environmental quality while creating accessible open spaces for the community.

Miriam Dalli emphasised the importance of such initiatives in addressing environmental challenges and strengthening biodiversity. The project is designed to create habitats for pollinating insects, while restoring natural surroundings to encourage the development of a healthier and more resilient ecosystem. She noted that Ġnien ta’ Kalċi is one of 16 community based open space projects being implemented through the Community Greening Grant scheme, made possible through collaboration with local councils and environmental organisations.
Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi highlighted the role of European funding in supporting environmental protection. He explained that the site will be developed into a protected natural space that both safeguards biodiversity and provides a welcoming environment for the public. He added that such projects contribute directly to improving quality of life and promoting long term sustainability.

Beyond its ecological value, the project is also expected to support climate action efforts. The introduction of new vegetation will increase carbon absorption within the area, with an estimated 2,800 kilograms of additional carbon dioxide to be captured annually. This will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving air quality for residents.
Project manager Tristjan Nikolic explained that around 195 trees and 105 shrubs will be planted, carefully selected to support local ecosystems and contribute to climate change mitigation. Funded through European funds, Ġnien ta’ Kalċi reflects a strong commitment to sustainable urban development.
