ADPD-The Green Party has called for the introduction of “train-style buses” operating on dedicated lanes, arguing that a modern Bus Rapid Transit system is the most effective way to tackle Malta’s growing traffic problem.

Speaking at a press conference in Birkirkara, party officials reacted to the government’s recently announced rail proposal, a project expected to take 15 years.

Chairperson Sandra Gauci said the announcement confirms that “there is no one single solution to the transport problem,” while criticising the lack of detail and transparency surrounding the plan.

Deputy Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo stressed that “The government itself has confirmed that the bus system will remain the backbone of Malta’s public transport network.”

He argued that investment should instead focus on high-capacity buses with dedicated lanes, frequent services and reliable journey times.

Cacopardo added that international experience shows such systems can deliver “metro-like performance” at a fraction of the cost. He warned that without measures to reduce car dependency, large-scale rail projects risk failing to deliver meaningful change.

The party is urging a comprehensive transport strategy prioritising immediate improvements and better use of road space.
