ADPD -The Green Party Reacts To Budget 2026: “A Budget With A Regressive Core”

ADPD-The Green Party has condemned the Government’s 2026 Budget, describing it as a missed opportunity to invest in Malta’s sustainable future. The party warned that the country is accumulating debt while failing to promote the wellbeing of its citizens. Rather than directing funds towards long-term social and ecological investments, the Budget continues to finance growth through unsustainable borrowing.
“The Government is borrowing against our children’s future,” ADPD stated. “We are piling up debt to support a growth model that exploits resources, deepens inequality, ignores ecological limits, and restricts future generations from making their own decisions. This is fiscal irresponsibility, not sustainability.”
While the family-friendly income tax measures outlined in the Budget may appear well-intentioned, ADPD criticised them as regressive, arguing that they fail to deliver social justice. Those at the lower end of the income scale should receive significantly more support than those in higher brackets, as they are in greater need. The inversion of this principle, the party suggests, undermines the Minister of Finance’s so-called socialist vision and reflects a short-sighted approach.
ADPD-The Green Party emphasised that genuine prosperity requires a shift to a wellbeing economy grounded in fairness, justice, and ecological responsibility. Central to this vision is the provision of dignified wages. The party highlighted that the minimum wage remains roughly 40% below levels deemed necessary for a decent standard of living for a typical household, a disparity that the Budget fails to address.
