ADPD-The Green Party has joined protests opposing the government’s proposed planning reform, warning that the legislation could lead to widespread deregulation.

Chairperson Sandra Gauci condemned the bills, saying they “take the country back to the Stone Age” and are designed to “remove every single regulation that aims to protect the interest of the public and our communities.”

Gauci criticised the government’s approach, stating that the reforms would allow speculators to operate unchecked, with the Planning Authority granted the power to ignore its own regulations at will.

Deputy Chairperson and architect Carmel Cacopardo added that while efficiency in planning is welcome, it should not come at the expense of public interest: “The Planning Authority needs to be more efficient in its work so that it protects the interest of the public and our communities. It needs to be a shield against abuse and not become the source of abuse.”

He highlighted that the Authority has become a “permit factory,” evaluating land mainly on potential building height rather than heritage or agricultural value.

The bills also shorten timeframes for civil society to appeal decisions and allow environmental considerations to be disregarded, introducing flexibility that risks confusion over regulations.

The Green Party warned that the measures, including proposals to legalise illegally built ODZ structures, would give speculators unprecedented leeway, undermining protections for communities.
