ADPD – The Green Party has raised concerns over the proposed Marsa stadium project, warning that it risks prioritising commercial interests over fairness and community sport.

Speaking on behalf of the party, spokesperson Luke Caruana said that while football remains highly popular in Malta, the development appears to favour one sport at the expense of others.

He highlighted uncertainty surrounding the future of baseball and softball facilities in Marsa, noting that these communities already face challenges due to limited infrastructure.

Caruana criticised what he described as a lack of consultation, stating that some organisations had indicated they were not engaged in discussions about the project.

He stressed that inclusive dialogue is essential for proper planning and to avoid marginalising smaller sporting groups.

He also questioned the involvement of government entities, pointing to the streaming of a related press conference on the Ministry for Home Affairs’ platform and raising concerns about links to citizenship schemes for foreign investors.

Additionally, Caruana expressed unease about the influence of Joseph Muscat in the football sector.

ADPD concluded that the project reflects a wider issue of commercialisation in sport, calling instead for transparent, community-focused investment that prioritises participation and the public good.
