ADPD–The Green Party has strongly condemned Foreign Minister Ian Borg’s decision, on behalf of the Maltese government, to formally support and nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

In a statement, the party described the move as “a great shame for our country,” arguing it stands in stark contrast to Malta’s recent formal recognition of Palestine as a state.“While the government claims to champion peace and human rights on the international stage, this nomination exposes just how hollow and superficial that rhetoric really is,” ADPD-The Green Party stated.

The Party emphasised that Trump’s presidency was marked by divisive politics, hate-filled rhetoric, and unwavering support for Israel’s military actions; actions that have contributed to the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

Supporting his nomination, they argued, reflects both political insensitivity and a damaging blow to Malta’s international credibility.

ADPD Chairperson Sandra Gauci denounced Borg’s gesture as nothing more than a “public relations stunt” designed to curry favour with the Trump administration.

“This looks like servile, opportunistic flattery that stains Malta’s reputation,” Gauci stated.

“The Maltese people deserve better representation, one who doesn’t embarrass Malta with the rest of the democratic world.”

The party reiterated its call for Malta to act with consistency and integrity in its foreign policy, especially on issues of peace and human rights.
