ADPD leader Sandra Gauci has called on parents to boycott the new ‘Fish Fridays’ initiative announced in the 2026 Budget.

Under the scheme, students will be offered fish for lunch on certain Fridays.

Gauci highlighted pressing issues in schools, including a lack of air conditioning, photocopiers, and reliable internet, despite the heavy focus on AI and laptops. She emphasised the urgent need for a nurse in every school, particularly those with 600 to 1,000 students, as well as quiet rooms and multisensory spaces for children with autism.

Other priorities she outlined include better-paid master teachers to prevent overwork, healthier school canteens.

Sandra Gauci added, “We should no longer offer O Level exams for free students should pay to take them, and those who pass would get their money back, as these exams require significant human and economic resources and give children goals to study for.”

“Children need goals,” Gauci said, “and they should be assessed based on ability, not just age, especially for those coming from abroad. Both students and teachers are struggling.”

She concluded with a call to parents, “When the time comes, say no. Our requests cannot continue to be ignored. This is for the good of the children.”
