ADPD Calls for Embassy or Electronic Voting for Maltese Citizens Abroad

ADPD (The Green Party) and its leader Sandra Gauci have criticised the current system that requires Maltese citizens living abroad to travel to Malta in order to vote in general elections.
In a statement, the party said that once again during a general election period, reports have emerged of Maltese citizens facing significant difficulties in booking flights to return home solely to cast their vote. ADPD described this situation as particularly concerning given the current global economic uncertainty.
The party argued that the practice of subsidising these flights using taxpayers’ money is irresponsible and outdated. Instead, it said Malta should align itself with standard practices in other democratic EU states by modernising its voting system.
ADPD called for reforms that would allow Maltese citizens abroad to vote either at the nearest Maltese embassy or through secure electronic voting systems. According to the party, such measures would ensure that voting is more accessible and inclusive, while also reducing financial and logistical burdens on citizens and the state.
Sandra Gauci and ADPD emphasised that the right to vote is a fundamental democratic principle that should be guaranteed to all Maltese citizens, regardless of where they reside. They insisted that electoral participation should be facilitated through modern, efficient systems that reflect today’s technological capabilities and international best practices.
