Additional €2 Million & New Support Allocated For Local Councils

The 2026 Budget has seen an increase of €2 million in the allocation of funds for Local Councils, with additional support granted to councils in areas that attract a high number of tourists.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli announced the measure during a visit to the Garden of Serenity, also known as the Chinese Garden, where new security cameras have been installed under a scheme promoting safer and stronger localities.
Zerafa Civelli explained that Local and Regional Councils play a key role in the day-to-day lives of residents across Malta and Gozo.
The Government, she said, will continue investing in the activities and projects that fall under their responsibility.
For the year ahead, funding will support initiatives in local culture, talent development and public cleanliness, as well as infrastructure such as roads, pavements and pedestrian areas.
Collaboration will continue with several ministries and entities, including Project Green and the Public Works Department, to deliver open spaces, restoration projects and large-scale embellishment works.
She added that these investments form part of the National Strategic Vision for Local Government, which focuses on improving governance, encouraging community involvement and promoting decentralisation.
Director General for Local Government Emile Vassallo highlighted efforts to digitalise council services to make them more efficient and accessible.
He also noted new training opportunities for council employees and mayors, including international placements.
Santa Luċija Mayor Charmaine St John welcomed the initiatives, saying the funding supports practical improvements that benefit residents and local communities.
