Academics Raise Concern Over Budget 2027 Measures Targeting Foreign Workers

A number of academics on the Platform for Migration at the University of Malta have expressed concern over Budget 2027 measures proposing higher transport fees and the withdrawal of free childcare services for third-country nationals (TCNs).
In a statement, the academics warned that the measures would impose a disproportionate financial burden on one section of Malta's workforce, raising questions about equality, fairness and social inclusion.
They described the measures as fundamentally discriminatory, arguing that they single out one part of the local workforce despite its contribution to the economy, including through taxation.
The academics also pointed out that many TCNs have practically no voice and no vote, leaving them with little ability to safeguard their rights or influence decisions affecting them.
They described the proposals as punitive measures targeting a sector of the workforce where many of the most vulnerable workers are found.
The Platform for Migration called on the Government to stand by its previously affirmed positions in favour of inclusivity, poverty reduction and support for marginalised groups, as outlined in its Poverty Strategy and Integration Strategy.
It also urged the Government to withdraw the measures, calling for goodwill and a commitment to the entire workforce without exceptions.
