Prime Minister Robert Abela has welcomed the announcement by US President Donald Trump that both Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of a peace agreement a move being hailed as a major step towards lasting stability in the Middle East.

In a statement, Prime Minister Abela reaffirmed Malta’s longstanding commitment to peace, describing the development as “undoubtedly positive.”

“Our country has always been committed to peace, and without doubt it is a positive development that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that an agreement had been reached on the first phase of a peace accord, which should lead to the release of hostages and to a ceasefire in Gaza,” Abela said.

He added that Malta’s recognition of the Palestinian State sent “an important and timely message that everyone deserves to live better and in prosperity.”

“Therefore, we reiterate our appeal: two peoples can live side by side in peace. We hope that these developments will eventually be translated into lasting peace,” he concluded.

President Donald Trump, in a formal statement, declared, “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first phase of our Peace Plan. This means that all of the hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a strong, durable, and everlasting peace. All parties will be treated fairly! This is a great day for the Arab and Muslim world, Israel, all surrounding nations, and the United States of America, and we thank the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, who worked with us to make this historic and unprecedented event happen. Blessed are the peacemakers!”
