ABELA LEADS BORG BY 13.6% IN FIRST PREFERRED PRIME MINISTER SURVEY OF CAMPAIGN

The first survey of Malta’s 2026 general election campaign indicates a clear lead for Robert Abela in the race for preferred prime minister, according to new findings conducted by renowned statistician Vincent Marmarà.
Respondents were asked which political leader they would prefer as Prime Minister of Malta, with results showing 45.6% favouring Abela, compared to 32.0% who opted for Alex Borg. This places Abela ahead by 13.6 percentage points in the headline result.
A further 10.7% of respondents said they remain undecided, while 8.0% indicated they would prefer neither candidate. Smaller shares selected alternative figures.
The survey also provides insight into how party supporters are aligning. Among those who voted Labour in the 2022 general election, 86.1% backed Abela as their preferred prime minister, with only 2.0% opting for Borg. Meanwhile, among Nationalist voters, 79.6% supported Borg, while 3.3% expressed a preference for Abela.
Notably, a segment of voters in both camps remain uncertain, suggesting some fluidity in voter sentiment despite strong party loyalty trends.
The latest figures mark an increase in Abela’s lead compared to previous polling, where the gap stood at 9.7%. The new results suggest that the Labour leader has consolidated support in recent months.
With the campaign now underway, the survey offers an early snapshot of public opinion, though the relatively high number of undecided voters indicates that shifts may still occur in the weeks leading up to election day.
