Robert Abela participated in an informal meeting of European leaders held in Cyprus, where discussions focused on energy, security, and key geopolitical challenges facing the European Union.

During the summit, the Prime Minister emphasised that Malta will continue implementing measures to shield families and businesses from rising energy prices, while ensuring stable supply and strong connectivity.

He stressed that while the EU must strengthen its energy resilience, policies should remain flexible to reflect the realities of smaller and island member states, maintaining a balance between climate ambition, competitiveness, and consumer protection.

Talks also addressed Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine, with an address by Volodymyr Zelensky. Abela reaffirmed Malta’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people and highlighted the importance of continued EU unity, sustained support, and diplomatic efforts to bring the war to an end.

Leaders further discussed the situation in the Middle East and its impact on European security and energy markets. Abela underlined that price stability remains a central priority for Malta, particularly in protecting citizens from external shocks.

The meeting also reviewed progress on negotiations for the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028–2034. Abela highlighted the importance of cohesion policy and ensuring fair access to EU funds, particularly for smaller and peripheral states.

The summit concluded with discussions alongside regional partners, focusing on stability, dialogue, and cooperation in addressing ongoing challenges.
