Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced a new initiative to provide smart wearable devices to elderly people aged over 80 who live alone, as part of a measure aimed at improving safety, health monitoring and peace of mind for senior citizens.

Speaking during a mass rally in Ħal Għaxaq, Abela said the devices will allow elderly residents living independently to have their health continuously monitored, with immediate action taken in the event of an emergency.

The wearable technology will be capable of detecting signs of rapid deterioration in a person’s health, while also monitoring hydration levels and heart rate.

It will also remind elderly users when it is time to take their medication, helping ensure better adherence to treatment and supporting day-to-day wellbeing.

Abela said the initiative forms part of the government’s wider investment in elderly care and innovation-driven social support measures, aimed at enabling senior citizens to live independently for longer while giving reassurance to their families.

The Prime Minister described the measure as another step towards strengthening Malta’s care systems and ensuring that older people benefit from the latest advancements in health technology.
