Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening financial support for pensioners and elderly citizens during a mass rally in Ħal Għaxaq.

Addressing supporters, Abela confirmed that the government will continue addressing the long-standing pension inequality affecting people born before and after 1962, a process which began in 2024.

He announced that by 2028, all pensioners affected by the disparity will have been fully addressed, with the maximum pensionable income becoming equal for all pensioners regardless of their year of birth. Abela described the reform as correcting an injustice created under a previous Nationalist administration.

The Prime Minister also announced a further increase to the grant given to senior citizens aged over 75, confirming that the annual allowance will rise by an additional €200.

Abela said the measure forms part of the government’s broader commitment to improving the quality of life of elderly people and ensuring stronger financial support amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

The pension reforms and increased grant were presented as key pillars of Labour’s social policy agenda as the party intensifies its campaign ahead of the general election on 30 May.

The announcements were met with applause from supporters gathered in Ħal Għaxaq, where Abela reiterated the government’s pledge to continue investing in social measures aimed at protecting pensioners and vulnerable groups.

The rally formed part of Labour’s final push before voters head to the polls later this month to elect Malta’s next government.
