EU-FUNDED PLAYBOAT BECOMES CREATIVE HUB FOR CHILDREN IN KALKARA

An abandoned boat in Kalkara has been given a new lease of life after being transformed into a creative and educational space for children, thanks to an initiative by voluntary organisation Generation (Change?).
Titled The Playboat: Voyage to Imagination, the project was co-financed through European Union funds and developed over recent months by dedicated volunteers. The aim was to turn the old vessel into a community symbol, an open-air library, and a space where children can embark on imaginative journeys.
Located at Ġnien is-Salvatur, the playboat is designed to encourage creativity and storytelling, offering families a unique environment to spend quality time together.
Kalkara mayor Wayne Aquilina praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of projects that strengthen community spirit and provide engaging spaces for children and families. He expressed hope that the boat will become more than just an attraction, but a place where stories are born and imagination thrives.
The project was officially inaugurated on April 30, during an event where volunteers presented a number of books to the Kalkara Local Council to be placed inside the boat. Children attending the launch eagerly climbed aboard, reading, drawing, and immersing themselves in the imaginative experience the project aims to inspire.
