Abandoned Birgu Building To Be Converted Into Three Social Housing Apartments
Local

A long-abandoned government building in Birgu is set to be restored and converted into three apartments for social housing, following an investment of €730,000.

Housing and Lands Minister Owen Bonnici visited the property at 6 and 7, Triq l-Antika, where consolidation and restoration works are due to begin.

Once completed, the three apartments will be added to the country’s housing stock and allocated for social housing through the Housing Authority.

During the visit, Bonnici said the ministry was working to give new life to government properties that had been abandoned for years by restoring them for residential use.

He added that projects of this kind help preserve the architectural heritage of localities while creating more housing opportunities and improving the condition and safety of buildings.

The property suffered a partial collapse of its parapet wall during a storm in December 2025. Following the necessary permits, consolidation works were able to begin on the section that sustained the most extensive damage.

Also present during the visit were Housing Projects Solutions chief executive architect Thomas Tanti, Housing Authority chief executive Matthew Zerafa and Birgu deputy mayor Jason Vincent Portelli.
