Aħwa Maltin To Shut Down After Failing To Attract Support Following Election

Political party Aħwa Maltin has announced that it will begin procedures to close down following its performance in the 2026 general election.

In a statement, party leader Paul Salomone said the party had struggled to attract volunteers, activists and candidates in the months leading up to the election, despite repeatedly appealing for support.

Aħwa Maltin received 1,845 votes, equivalent to around 0.6% of valid votes cast in the election.

Salomone said he had attempted to identify a new party leader in July, but the person he had considered for the role declined. He said that, as a result, there was “nothing else” left to do but close the party.

The party leader also thanked those who voted for Aħwa Maltin, saying their support and trust had been appreciated.

The Electoral Commission had listed Aħwa Maltin candidates across Malta’s electoral districts during the May election.

According to Salomone, the party’s committee will meet on the 6th of October to begin the procedures required to formally close the political organisation.

Aħwa Maltin was one of several smaller parties to contest the 2026 general election.
