The Malta Ranger Unit shared a wholesome video of a rare spotting of a seven-spot ladybird, known in Maltese as ‘nannakola tas-seba’ tikek.’
‘This is one of the approximately 5,000 species of ladybird worldwide’, the ranger unit explained. ‘They are seen mainly during late spring, but can be seen occasionally during other times of the year as well.’
‘During the colder months they would be dormant and would take shelter under tree bark or in other dry and sheltered crevices.’
‘Their principal diet is aphids, making them a perfect pest control! When humans started to overuse pesticides, the ladybird declined in numbers.’
These insects were known to be very numerous around Malta before they started to dwindle.
