Justice Minister Jonathan Attard has confirmed that a new site has been identified for the long awaited Gozo court.

Speaking during a budget debate in parliament, he announced that the government has signed a promise of sale agreement for an existing building that will be transformed into a new and modern courthouse.

While he did not disclose the exact location or provide a development timeline, he stated that full details will be revealed in the coming days.

The need for a new courthouse in Gozo has been recognised for over a decade.

The current court within the historic Citadel has repeatedly been criticised for limited space, outdated facilities and accessibility and security challenges linked to the structure’s architectural heritage.

Previous attempts to relocate the courts date back to proposals for Great Siege Square in Victoria and later the Xewkija Industrial Zone, neither of which materialised.

Attard noted that the latest agreement represents a concrete step forward and expressed confidence that the government is finally making this a reality.
