This coming Saturday will see the long awaited general election, so we thought we’d take a look back at all those who have served as Prime Minister of Malta.

The longest serving Prime Minister was Dom Mintoff, who boasts 6,075 days (16.6 years) with 4 election wins as Labour Party leader.

He was followed by Eddie Fenech Adami with 5,482 days (15 years), also with 4 election wins as Nationalist Party leader.

The current Prime Minister, Robert Abela, currently has 2,327 days in office (6.4 years), with 1 election win as party leader.

The first prime minister of Malta was Joseph Howard, taking office under the 1921 self-government constitution. He served 717 days in office after leading the Unione Politica Maltese.

He was followed by Francesco Buhagiar, and served just 345 days as Prime Minister. This comes ahead of next Saturday’s general election, with Abela vying for another term and the PN’s Alex Borg contesting from the Opposition.
