A Heatwave Is Hitting This Weekend: Here’s What To Do

The Health Authorities are urging the public to take the necessary precautions as temperatures are expected to rise significantly over the coming days, with the Malta Meteorological Office issuing heatwave alerts.
In response to the forecast extreme heat, the Heat Health Action Plan has been escalated to help reduce possible health risks.
Cooling centres in several localities are being activated to support highly vulnerable individuals who may not have access to adequate cooling facilities at home.
The public is being reminded of the importance of staying hydrated and taking steps to avoid heat-related illnesses. High temperatures can cause the body to lose water quickly, leading to dehydration.
Warning signs include increased thirst, a dry mouth, dark urine and reduced urination.
Extreme heat can also result in heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Heat exhaustion may cause weakness, dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, heavy sweating and intense thirst. Those requiring medical advice can call 21231231.
Heatstroke is a more serious condition that occurs when the body can no longer regulate its temperature. Symptoms may include confusion, dizziness, seizures, loss of consciousness and an unusually high body temperature. Emergency assistance should be requested by calling 112.
While everyone can be affected by high temperatures, older persons, particularly those over 75, babies, young children, people with chronic health conditions, those experiencing mental health difficulties, outdoor workers and individuals taking certain medications are at greater risk.
The Health Authorities are also advising people to check regularly on older relatives, neighbours and friends, especially those living alone, to ensure they are able to remain cool and safe during periods of extreme heat.
People travelling abroad are also encouraged to take precautions, including drinking water regularly, avoiding the hottest hours of the day, choosing lighter meals and checking medical advice related to medication use in hot weather.
