A Family’s Life Altering Moment & The Hope Dar Bjorn Offered

As Malta unites for today’s telethon, one family shares their story of how DAR Bjorn provided an essential lifeline when their world was turned upside down.

“We had so many plans… but that’s life.” These are the poignant words of the partner of Reinhard, a 46-year-old man whose life was irrevocably changed in an instant. For 17 years, they had built a life together, a future filled with shared passions for nature and the underwater world he so loved.

But a sudden, devastating brain injury, which left him deprived of oxygen, shattered their world in a moment.

“It was a bolt from the blue,” his partner recalls. The vibrant man they knew was left in what she describes as “the most disabled state that can exist.” Today, Reinhard cannot move. He cannot speak. His presence is felt in the quiet, steady sound of his breathing. Their shared life was turned completely upside down.

The family faced a harsh new reality. Bringing Reinhard home was simply not an option. “You can’t take him home,” his partner explains. “You would need a full team of people, without even considering the specialised medical equipment and medicine required.”

In the face of an unimaginable challenge, they found their only viable option, their only sanctuary, was DAR Bjorn.

“The importance of DAR Bjorn is impeccable,” she says, her voice heavy with gratitude. The facility offered more than just a room and essential 24/7 treatment; it provided a space of professional, dignified care. She vividly remembers the promise from its founder, Bjorn Formosa, which solidified their hope in a time of despair: “Bjorn told me, ‘I promise you, I will help you in the best way I can’.”
